The Carnival of Goa

The Carnival of Goa is the most colorful and popular festival of Goa. It is held in the month of February every year, comes before Easter. This grand festival is celebrated all over Goa for three days and people from different corners of the world joins the crowning glory of Goa. On the festival days and nights the streets come alive with the strumming of guitars, graceful dances and of non-stop festivity. Various competitions and cultural functions are held in these three days.

Carnival was celebrated with a festive mood filling the air with the sound of the drums and music, a procession of masked men thronging the streets of the main town and even some villages. Decorated bullock carts, cars and trucks with men dressed in colorful dresses walked the streets. A float parade is also been organized with "King Momo" in command. The star of the parade is King Momo, usually a local chosen dignitary, who presides over the festivities. The float parade is held in major towns of Goa. Calangute also started its float parade since 2007.

The typical guitar music with its enticing rhythm and harmony, heard all over Goa, is part of the rich musical heritage adopted from Portugal. Other than music, dance and other entertainment, the carnival also features short plays which includes the tradition and culture of Goa in a unique way. Earlier people would throw oranges, eggs, flour, lemons, gloves filled with sands, mud, glue, and dirty water to the passers by and nowadays people used to throw colors on each other. The Carnival of Panjim is the most popular compare to others that follow in Margoa, Vasco, Mapusa etc.

The Carnival of Goa is introduced by Portuguese during the era of King Momo, the legendary King of Chaos. Traditionally, a tall, fat man is chosen to fulfill the role because the original King Momo was of that physical stature. Ever since the carnival is celebrated every year and Goans takes part in it with pleasure. Every year, Goa Carnival comes just before Easter Sunday.

This is one of the busiest festival seasons in Goa, therefore advance reservation is a must. It is advised to book your hotel and travel tickets well in advance as Goa Carnival attracts huge number of tourists from all over the world.
